Educational Journey through Service Recipients

In order to learn more about our students' academic journey I interviewed a few students who attend our Tuesday sites. One of the students I interviewed was Selina Win. Selina is a current seventh grader who attends our MAPS Academy site on Tuesdays. Selina is one of the students I have come to build a strong connection with, she never fails to make you laugh. During our interview Selina expressed that she has difficulty learning math, and often faces challenges understanding math lessons. Although during our sites we have engaging activities and lessons that get our students’ brains going, it is important to cater our activities to the needs of our students. In order to foster growth in students academic performance it is essential to ensure our activities focus on subject areas students struggle with. By prioritizing student needs, we help them gain confidence in their abilities and reach their full potential.

Another student I interviewed was Hanan. Hanan is another one of our students who attend Tuesday sites. During our interview I asked her about her future career aspirations. She expressed that she wants to become a lawyer. I then asked her if MAPS has helped foster this goal. She explained that MAPS has allowed her to build a community of  like-minded individuals who support and encourage her aspirations. She also shared how MAPS has introduced her to a network of college students who are there to advise her and provide guidance on her academic and career journey. Through these connections, she has gained insight on the importance of higher education and what it means to be successful. Her response reinforced the importance of providing students with access to mentorship and a supportive community that nurtures their ambitions.
